Delaware
& Raritan Canal State Park
The bicycling / walking trail along the Delaware & Raritan
Canal is not only an excellent bike trail;
it offers great access to the Delaware River.
It borders the river from south of Scudder
Falls to Frenchtown and beyond!
There are many parking areas along RT. 29
(Jersey side of the river) to access the trail.
A good day trip is to park at the Scudder Falls’ lot
(across the street from the State Police building
on River Road) and ride up to Lambertville
and back. This trip is approximately 10 miles
each way.
The trail surface is composed of crushed,
packed stone and I recommend using a mountain
bike with universal tires. A road bike can
be used but there are areas of erosion and
loose gravel. On weekends, you will find a
lot of trail traffic south of Stockton and limited
traffic on weekdays.
Great places to stop along the way are Scudders
Falls, located ¼ mile north of I-95
overpass, Washington Crossing State Park (no
mountain bikes are allowed on the trails of this park),
Lambertville wing dam, Lambertville, Stockton,
Bulls Island State Park, Lumberville General
Store (located on the Pennsylvania side of
the Bulls
Island pedestrian bridge), and Frenchtown.
There are also benches and picnic benches along
the trail north of Stockton.
